Press Release

The City of Plymouth Credit Union provides a community-based alternative to banks and building societies and has been supporting its members through the coronavirus pandemic with support from Plymouth City Council.

The Council provided quick access to the government’s Small Business Grants Fund enabling the credit union to claim financial support, making sure that we are able to continue to support our members through the pandemic.

This support means we have been able to invest in additional technology that will allow some of our volunteers to work from home, adding capacity to our telephone service and resilience to our business continuity, whilst continuing to protect our staff and volunteers.

The Council also provided volunteers to call our more vulnerable members to help them through the confusion of the pandemic and to prepare printed materials to help signpost people to the service we provide, enabling them to access their money which is crucial during this time.

“We are so pleased with how Plymouth City Council have been helping us provide services to all during the Covid-19 crisis. Some of our members are amongst the most vulnerable in society and making sure they are supported is vital” said Dave Kilroy, Chair of City of Plymouth Credit Union

We will continue to build on this relationship to provide financial services to families and individuals in Plymouth.

Councillor Chris Penberthy, Cabinet Member for Housing and Co-operative Development, said: “The credit union’s work is absolutely vital, supporting many people in our community who can’t access a bank account. This includes some of the most vulnerable people in our communities, who are even more at risk during the coronavirus pandemic – especially if they need to self-isolate. It’s incredibly important that they can access financial support during this unprecedented time and we’re pleased to be working together to make that happen.”

The City of Plymouth Credit Union is an ethical, not for profit, member-owned financial organisation.

We are dedicated to the economic development of the community in Plymouth, Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, providing financial services to all of our members, including those who have been excluded from traditional services and who are often badly served by national financial organisations.

We offer a real community-based alternative to banks and building societies. Using our members’ savings, we provide loans at affordable, highly competitive interest rates.
